Year 2000 - Y2K - (A Historic Look)
Because time is an integral element in most financial products, the financial community may be the most affected by the millennium bug. For all of the benefits of the computer age, this is a very serious problem that deserves the utmost attention. The problem can take many forms. The most common being the real time clock (RTC) and the truncated dates in mainframe systems. The truncated dates grew out of the days when memory was an expensive consideration in program design. When programmers used 50 instead of 1950 considerable memory and cost was saved. The problem occurs in the next century. Unless corrected, the computer will often consider the integer 01 to be 1901 as opposed to 2001. The integrity of financial calculations will be lost.
