The Metaverse


This DFIN Glossary is to be used for informational purposes only and intended to assist the public in understanding some of the specialized words and phrases in FinTech. This Glossary is not all inclusive,. DFIN Assumes no responsibility for errors and omissions.

Interoperability: The ability for virtual possessions and identities to travel unchanged across platforms and different vendors. In time the best will cross virtual worlds ie: between Decentraland, Sandbox and Second life.      



Persistence: The continuation of virtual life regardless of whether people are online or offline.    



Decentralization: The idea that the metaverse will not be regulated or run by a single corporation or individual. All countries started free. Keep that in mind.    



NFT Non-fungible tokens (NFTs): Are digital certificates or other forms of ownership/authenticity.    



Digital twins: Business or personal physical spaces that have been duplicated in the virtual world for ease of use.     



Liminal Spaces: Gathering spaces and event locales that incorporate both physical and virtual elements. Spaces between one destination and the next.    



Extended Reality: An umbrella term encompassing augmented, virtual, and mixed realities.    



Augmented Reality (AR): AR uses a real-world setting while VR is completely virtual and requires special headgear. Pokémon Go is a good example that runs on a cell phone.    



Virtual (VR): A computer-generated environment with scenes and objects that appear to be real, making the user feel they are immersed in their surroundings. This environment is perceived through a device known as a Virtual Reality headset or helmet.    



Mixed Realities (MR): Mixed reality is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations, where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time. Wikipedia A Good Explanation on YouTube

Web3: A decentralized, blockchain-based internet.

Virtual teleportation: A new technologically enabled form of travel or collaboration that uses multi-sensory and photorealistic renderings to make you feel as if you’re in the same room as someone who could be halfway around the (physical) world. Phygital: The term phygital comes from the fusion of the words physical and digital. In short, it is nothing more than the integration between the physical world and the digital world.

Haptics: Haptics is the discipline which studies the sense of touch. It is a form of nonverbal communication and the way by which people communicate via touching. Touch, or the haptic sense, is extremely important for humans, as well as providing information about surfaces and textures.
